Personal injury

Jaime Koziol is no stranger to courtroom victories. This personal injury and medical malpractice attorney has strung together an impressive record already, despite being just 30 years old at the time of this writing.

An example? She achieved a $9 million malpractice settlement on behalf of the family of a child who suffered a catastrophic brain injury, where the hospital and its doctors failed to perform the appropriate Group B streptococcal prenatal screening, resulting in the transmission of an infection to the baby. As a result, the child suffered Group B streptococcal sepsis, meningitis, a hypoxic ischemic brain injury and, ultimately, the catastrophic brain injury.

Koziol also earned a $1.17 million medical malpractice verdict for an 84-year-old resident of a nursing home who suffered an embolic ischemic stroke after her attending physician failed to appropriately order and monitor her dosage of the medicine Coumadin. Koziol gave the opening and closing arguments during this trial, and presented some of the plaintiff’s key witnesses.

Steven Levin, the founding partner of the Chicago law firm of Levin & Perconti where Jaime works, said that these results are far from rare.

“In a difficult medical malpractice case, Jaime gave a closing argument that not only was incredibly well-organized, but transfixed the jury,” Levin said. “That she received an extraordinary verdict in this type of case against a highly regarded and experienced medical malpractice defense attorney was not surprising.”

But Koziol’s courtroom victories don’t tell the whole story. This young attorney has a knack for connecting with her clients, understanding their concerns and relieving as much of the stress involved in legal battles.

“She is compassionate about the clients she represents,” said Lee Williams with Chicago law firm Lowis & Gellen, who has been opposing counsel on several of Koziol’s cases. “She takes the time to talk to her clients and gain the necessary understanding about how an injury has impacted a victim of malpractice. She does not overstate or exaggerate her clients’ injuries. Yet, at the same time, she is able to appropriately value her cases to make sure the future needs of her clients are met.”

Robyn Marsh, with the Chicago office of Seyfarth Shaw, said that Koziol puts in the time necessary to put her clients at ease. Her willingness to do this helps set Koziol apart from other attorneys, Marsh said.

“Jaime really seems to enjoy that her practice gives her the ability to help and advocate for plaintiffs,” Marsh said.

Koziol’s talents are no longer a secret. She has been tapped to give several presentations and lectures, often on elder law and the legal issues that nursing homes and their residents often face. She is also a busy member of several bar associations, including the Chicago Bar Association, Federal Bar Association and Women’s Bar Association.
