Jury awards record verdict in downstate wrongful-death case

A jury has awarded the largest wrongful-death verdict in a southern Illinois county — $1.2 million — to the family of a boy struck and killed by an ambulance. Thirteen-year-old Brett McDaniel was riding his bike in 2007 in Golconda, the Pope County seat with about 700 residents along the Ohio River, when he was hit by an ambulance owned by Mercy Regional Medical System LLC of Paducah, Ky., and driven by one of Mercy’s employees.
