1946 The International War Crimes Tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany, sentenced 12 Nazi officials to death. Seven others were sentenced to prison terms, and three were acquitted.   1964 The Free Speech Movement was launched on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley. In protests unprecedented in scope, students insisted the university administration lift the ban of on-campus political activities and acknowledge the students’ right to free speech and academic freedom.
