1956 William J. Brennan Jr. became a U.S. Supreme Court justice. He served for 34 years, the seventh-longest term in history. Known as a leader of the court’s liberal wing, Brennan authored New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, which required “actual malice” in a libel suit against those deemed to be public figures. 1998 Former Chilean dictator Gen.
