1937 William H. Hastie became the first black federal judge. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Hastie to the U.S. District Court for the Virgin Islands, where he served for two years. 1999 A jury in Michigan found Dr. Jack Kevorkian guilty of second-degree murder for administering a lethal injection to a terminally ill man. He served eight years and was released on parole in 2007 on the condition that he would not participate or give advice regarding assisted suicide.
