$5M accord ends trial on its first day

An ironworker who severely injured his hand on the job settled his lawsuit for $5.03 million on the first day of trial.Fernando Cazares, 43, who was working for Imperial Steel Construction, was helping to conclude a workday on South Racine Avenue in March 2010 when muddy workplace conditions caused him to lose balance and fall into a moving crane part.Cazares was removing a pin that holds the stabilizers — or outriggers — down when a LaGrange Crane Services Inc. crane operator allegedly began retracting them …
