Hoppe, a medical-malpractice attorney whose trial work led to an Illinois Supreme Court decision that ended “abuses” of the state’s voluntary-dismissal statute and who represented the Chicago Bears’ team doctor in 1974 against a suit filed by newly retired linebacker Dick Butkus, died Thursday of brain cancer.
