The biggest civil legal aid organizations in Chicago and Cleveland have lunch riding on the outcome of the World Series, which begins tonight between the Cubs and the Indians.

Should the Cubs lay claim to their first championship in 108 years, The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland will send pierogies.

But if the Tribe gets the title — something it hasn’t done since 1948 — LAF will send deep-dish pizza.

The friendly wager was inspired by LAF winning a similar bet last year, said Anakin K. Morris, LAF’s marketing and development officer.

When the Blackhawks faced the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2015 Stanley Cup Finals, Morris contacted Bay Area Legal Services in Tampa. The Blackhawks won in six games, earning cigars for Morris and the LAF board.

This year, Morris said the stakes are even higher.

The last time the Cubs won the World Series in 1908, LAF didn’t exist.

It still didn’t exist in 1945, the last time the Cubs played in the World Series. The organization was founded 21 years later in 1966.

Morris said LAF employees have Cubs caps and jerseys in the office and he said there’s a W flag around somewhere.

It’s also been 68 years since the Indians won. Melanie A. Shakarian, director of development and communications for the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, said Cleveland is often the underdog in sports.

“But as we saw in the NBA championships, never count Cleveland out,” she said, referring to the Cavaliers’ title in June against the Golden State Warriors. The basketball title broke a citywide championship drought that began in 1964.

At 108 years and 68 years respectively, the Cubs and Indians currently have the longest championship droughts in Major League Baseball.

In addition to the friendly wager being a fun way to follow the series, Morris and Shakarian both said they hope it might get some attention so the public can get to know the work their organizations do to provide free legal counsel to low-income people.

Shakarian said the Cleveland staff has been furiously researching deep-dish toppings. If the Indians win, she said, she wants a classic with sausage and cheese — and maybe spinach and other vegetables.

If the Cubs win, Morris said he likes the pierogies with cheese and potatoes, but he’ll eat anything.
