1970President Richard Nixon nominated judge G. Harrold Carswell for the U.S. Supreme Court. The nomination became intensely controversial after a reporter discovered the text of a 1948 political campaign speech by Carswell in which he said “segregation of the races is proper.” The Senate eventually rejected the nomination by a vote of 51 to 45.1989President Ronald Reagan pardoned George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees, for convictions relating to illegal contributions to Richard Nixon’s 1972 campaign.
