Last month the focus of this column was the Illinois Supreme Court’s opinion in People v. Veach. You may recall that in Veach the Supreme Court rejected what it described as the “broad sweeping ‘categorical approach’ in whether to consider ineffective assistance of counsel claims on direct appeal.”This lawyer’s view was that Veach would ultimately punish defendants with latent defects in their defense.
