Honors

Three employees of the Kane County State's Attorney's Office were honored recently for their contributions to the office, law enforcement, and their community in 2009, and for their commitment to public service.

Assistant state's attorney Marzenia M. Van de Burgt was named Prosecutor of the Year; longtime Kane County employee Janet Halsey, the office's administrative assistant for Courtroom 311, was named Employee of the Year; and assistant state's attorney Thomas E. St. Jules was the recipient of the Ace of Spades Award.


In the bar associations

Income Tax Update is the topic of a free continuing legal education course to be offered by The Decalogue Society of Lawyers on Wednesday at 29 S. LaSalle St., Room 610.

The program, which offers one hour of MCLE credit, will be presented by Lawrence R. Krupp, director of the Deerfield accounting firm of Kessler, Orlean, Silver & Co. P.C.

The DuPage County Bar Association's New Lawyers Committee is hosting a happy hour at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Caliendo's Restaurant and Bar, 0S050 Winfield Road, Winfield.

The Kane County Bar Association is holding an Ask a Lawyer Day on Saturday.

Volunteer attorneys are available by phone at (630) 762-1900 between 9 a.m. and noon for a free consultation.

The association holds the event on the second Saturday of every month.

The Cook County Bar Association will present its 11th Annual Barristers' and Scholarship Ball on March 20 at Hilton Oak Lawn Hotel and Conference Center, 9333 S. Cicero Ave.

The event, which includes a tribute to civil rights attorney Lawrence E. Kennon, will be held from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Madsen, Farkas & Powen LLC has elevated Michael S. McGrory to partner in the firm.

McGrory focuses his practice in civil litigation, representing clients in matters including aviation, commercial disputes, civil rights and police department defense, employment, insurance coverage, government liability and tort defense cases.

The firm also added Michael S. Shapiro as an associate.

Shapiro, who previously served as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge Matthew F. Kennelly, focuses his practice in commercial litigation.

John L. Hayes has been elected partner in Krasnow, Saunders, Cornblath LLP, where he handles general business litigation with an emphasis on employment litigation and counseling.

John M. McGarry has joined Anderson, Rasor & Partners LLP as a partner.

McGarry, who joins the firm from Dykema, Gossett PLCC, focuses his practice in medical malpractice defense litigation, as well as commercial litigation and related investigations.
