Anna Lozoya
Sinai Health System
Health care and hospital law

Anna Lozoya is one of those lucky few. She built a thriving career in a field around her passion: health care.

Lozoya is associate general counsel of risk at Sinai Health System in Chicago.  Her peers say that Lozoya is especially dedicated to the concept of risk management.

"Anna loves to analyze problems and find solutions, namely negotiating," said Moses Suarez with SmithAmundsen. "She often says, 'I don’t litigate. I negotiate.' She is savvy in maneuvering situations to resolution.."

Her legal skills and ability to negotiate have served Lozoya well during her career, and have helped her boost the finances of clients. Lozoya successfully appealed the termination of a pharmacy benefits manager network membership for breach of contracts on behalf of several pharmacies. The cancelation of membership to PBM networks can translate to millions of lost dollars annually for retail pharmacies.

Last year, Lozoya litigated a replevin action, her first time. The case involved a dog and was highly emotional. Lozoya attempted to negotiate a settlement throughout the course of the proceedings without any success. Lozoya forged ahead, though, and the court ruled in favor of her client both after a two-day evidentiary hearing and trial.

"For an attorney that prides herself on negotiating, Lozoya had full command of both proceedings, to the extent that the defendant admitted to plotting the entire scheme to take possession of the dog during cross-examination," Suarez said.

In her role as associate general counsel for Sinai Health System, Lozoya administers and directs the claims, insurance, risk management and workers' compensation programs. The health system entrusts her with the important task of advising and drafting key policies. These policies impact the health system not only legally but ethically and financially.

Her peers aren't surprised that Lozoya has thrived in the healthcare field. That's because she's long exhibited the traits — she is detail-oriented, hardworking, smart, passionate and dedicated to her clients.

Before moving into health-care law, Lozoya made her mark in real estate law. Sulema Medrano Novak, with Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, points to one case in particular. Lozoya assisted multiple tenants in breaking their lease because of malfunctioning elevators in a downtown high-rise. These tenants were facing breach-of-contract and eviction actions. But Lozoya negotiated an agreement tailored to each client’s needs.

"Anna can walk into a room and observe intricacies within the crowd. Her observational skills learned as a nurse, allow her to adapt to circumstances from the boardroom to the courtroom," Novak said. "Anna is a problem-solver; she gets the job done."

Lozoya also gives back to her community. She serves as Region IX President of the Hispanic Bar Association. She is also the Secretary of the Health Care Section Council of the ISBA and is the founder and co-chair of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses-Illinois chapter's Mentoring Committee.

In addition, Lozoya served as a board member of the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois from 2017 through 2019. She also served on DePaul University's College of Law Alumni Engagement Board and chaired the Events Committee there for two years
