The Illinois State Police has agreed to pay $40 million to five men who spent years in prison for a rape and murder they did not commit. At a news conference in the Dirksen Federal Courthouse today, attorneys for the men called the “Dixmoor Five” contended their clients were convicted on the basis of false confessions extracted through coercion or physical force.
