Jury awards inmate $252K after beating by prison employees

A downstate federal jury awarded $252,100 to an inmate who sued several prison employees and doctors after he was beaten and not medically treated for his injuries.On Feb. 5, 2014, William Qualls, a lieutenant at Menard Correctional Center, and Nathan Berry, a prison guard, reportedly beat prisoner Osbaldo Jose-Nicolas while another guard watched.Jose-Nicolas charged he was handcuffed when Qualls punched him in the head, smashed his head into a concrete wall and kicked him in the torso and legs until he was unconscious …
