Bill would allow undocumented immigrants to pick guardian

SPRINGFIELD — In the instance of detention or deportation of an undocumented immigrant, a child could be left without a legal guardian. A freshman state lawmaker wants to change that by allowing undocumented immigrants to be able to appoint short-term guardians in the event of an emergency.House Bill 836, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Jennifer H. Gong-Gershowitz of Glenview, amends the Probate Act of 1975 by changing the process to allow undocumented immigrant parents to designate a short-term legal guardian in the …
