In the latest issue of the Illinois Courts Connect newsletter, John Lupton of the Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission recounts the state’s history with censorship in film and how Chicago passed the country’s first law prohibiting obscenity in moving pictures in 1907. The state’s top court upheld the law in Jake Block et al. v. City of Chicago, a precedent that stood for nearly a half-century.
