Laura Hoey is the office managing partner of the Chicago office and co-leader of the health care and life sciences industry group at Ropes & Gray. She is also a former co-leader of the government enforcement/white collar criminal defense group.

Laura is highly regarded for running major investigations and for her ability to distill complicated facts. Her career highlights include securing unique and exceptional victories for leading global health care and pharmacy enterprises, as well as individuals and Fortune 500 companies based in the Midwest.

She has also built an accomplished practice that includes high-stakes domestic and international investigations spanning numerous countries and involving various government and regulatory compliance matters.

Laura currently represents a major pharmaceutical company in an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York focused on alleged violations of the federal False Claims Act. She also currently represents a private equity company in a multiyear investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Flor-da and in a related qui tam lawsuit relating to alleged False Claims Act violations. Her recent matters include defending a major pharmacy company in a case alleging common-law fraud and violations of several states’ consumer protection statutes, as well as representing a prominent Arkansas businessman in a federal public corruption case and preparing him for trial defense against charges of conspiracy and honest services wire fraud.

In her capacity as office managing partner, Laura promotes inclusive practices by recruiting a diverse pool of attorneys and providing mentorship and career sponsorship to women lawyers. Laura is an active member and former co-chair of Ropes & Gray’s Women’s Forum, which focuses on the development and advancement of female lawyers at the firm. She is also actively involved with trade organizations such as the Women’s White Collar Defense Association.

Under Laura’s leadership, the Chicago office has expanded its outreach in the local community, including hosting legal clinics in the Chicago office to provide pro bono record sealing and expungement to people with criminal records to help them remove barriers to employment. Laura is also on the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Panel of the Office of the Federal Defender. CJA Panel members provide pro bono representation to individuals in criminal cases who cannot afford to retain counsel.
