Marcia Owens is a partner at Honigman LLP. Marcia represents clients in all aspects of commercial real estate, from acquisition and disposition, to finance, workouts and leasing. Marcia has experience in industrial, retail, office, and mixed-use transactions. She has represented clients in numerous transactions involving acquisitions and dispositions including vacant, improved or income-producing assets, tax free exchange transactions, complex debt and equity financing, retail leasing. This includes the negotiation of leases with national department stores, big box retailers, junior anchors, grocery stores and national small shop tenants, and complex development and reciprocal easement agreements.

Her experience spans the country, representing clients with transactions in Illinois, as well as Arizona, California, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas. Marcia not only has the technical experience necessary for a sophisticated real estate transaction, but prides herself on partnering with her clients to implement the strategies necessary to accomplish the client’s goal and get a deal done.

Marcia received her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1998. She spent the first 16 years of her career at Wildman Harrold, Allen & Dixon LLP (which merged into Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP in 2011 and is now part of Locke Lord) before transitioning to the boutique firm of Hamilton Thies & Lorch for the next six years. Marcia recently joined the Chicago office of Honigman LLP in March 2020, only a few short days before the stay at home orders went into effect in Illinois.

In addition to her substantive practice, Marcia has spent the better part of her career working to advance opportunities for women in the legal profession. She was awarded the Alta May Hulett Award by the Chicago Bar Association Alliance for Women in 2011 and was listed as one of the Illinois Top 50 Women Lawyers by SuperLawyers in 2015. She served as chair and founder of the Women’s Global Collaborative at Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP (a 650-member international law firm at the time of her service), the chair of the Women’s Initiative at Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon LLP, past Chair of the National Board of Directors for the Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law and Past President of the Chicago Chapter of the Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law. Her work with the Coalition included leading efforts to expand the Coalition to New York and Washington D.C. She has been recognized for her achievements as a female lawyer and regularly writes and speaks on this topic.

Marcia is also a licensed Illinois real estate broker and a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers. She has served on the Illinois Legal Aid Online Host Committee, as a past Trustee of the Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago and as a Member of the Chicago Public Education Fund. Outside of her legal practice, Marcia served as a Girl Scout Leader for seven years. She is married to Greg Owens, a real estate broker at MJ Partners and has three children, ages 14, 16 and 18.
