Transgender woman sues over prison placement

A transgender woman sued the Illinois Department of Corrections Tuesday seeking a transfer to a women’s prison after spending over a decade incarcerated in correctional facilities for men.The federal lawsuit was filed by the Uptown People’s Law Center and the MacArthur Justice Center on behalf of Janiah Monroe, 29, a inmate currently at Pontiac Correctional Center.Pontiac is a maximum security men’s facility where the Uptown People’s Law Center says officials refuse to recognize Monroe as a woman …
