Illinois prisons ordered to improve conditions for transgender inmates

A federal judge ordered the Illinois Department of Corrections to implement measures designed to improve health care and housing conditions for transgender individuals serving time in prison.In a written opinion Monday, Chief U.S. District Judge Nancy J. Rosenstengel of the Southern District of Illinois issued a preliminary injunction requiring prison officials to take such steps as starting hormone therapy for transgender inmates who have requested it and promptly evaluating inmates’ requests for gender …
